About Me

I’m Josh, a recent Game Design Masters Degree graduate of The University of Staffordshire (Distinction).

This page goes over me, my life, and my hobbies!

Unsurprisingly, my biggest hobby is playing and making games! First, I'll give an idea of what I’ve played:

As someone born in 2000, I grew up playing games on the Nintendo DS/Wii and the PlayStation 2/3 before getting a laptop in my teenage years. Now I mainly games on a PC, but still find time to go on consoles for exclusives I want to play!

In these sections usually people pick a favourite game they’ve played, I’ve played a pretty ridiculous amount of games and love them all for many different reasons. So, to me, picking a favourite is like asking someone to boil down what their favourite experience in life is, some people can pick a specific moment or time in their life, others get stuck and have trouble choosing. On any given day, I’d be in the second camp, but for this site, I’ll give my most common choice when presented with the question…

For me, even if I'm not fully sure, I'll pick the Metal Gear Solid series (though I have some strong opinions on MGS5). But, in case you are curious, I'll be listing a huge amount of the games I love or have had a significant impact on me below!

I Love Gaming!

What I’m currently playing: Old School RuneScape, Jump Space, Lies of P, Terraria.

Over the past six years I have participated in a few game jams with my friends. Generally we try to make something unique, but the real aim is just to have fun together. The most common one I join is the Global Game Jam every January, with other jams joined every so often when me & my friends have time. As the years have gone by, our skills have gotten better, which had led to us creating cooler and better games during our jams!

I’ve won a game jam with Graze Craze, in which I received a Bafta Albert award for sustainability practices!

Game Jams

Most of the game jams I have took part in are available to download and play from my Itch.io page. And can be viewed in the All Projects section of the home page of this site.

The images to the side are some of the games made and how we hung out while making them. In my opinion In-person is the way to go!

That pretty much sums it up for my love of games, but you might be asking yourself:

“What does this guy even do outside of games?”

Now, that’s a good question so the next half of the ‘About Me’ will cover that!

Literature Usage While Designing

To give some example of literature usage, during the design process of The Attributer, I looked at The Lens of Unification from The Art of Game Design when trying to determine what the overall ‘theme’ of what game was.

I have also looked at designing Economies using chapters from Game Balance, specifically for a work-in-progress project that has yet to be announced that balances time, risk, money, and luck as core driving factors behind the players behaviour.

Through reading and broadening my knowledge, generally I have moments during my design process where I go ‘Aha!’ when something I’m working on resembles a topic of design mentioned in these books. It’s a pretty exciting feeling, so, if you have read any of these and want to talk about them, I would absolutely love to!

Books I’m Reading

I’ve been reading game design books in my spare time to gain new perspective when being creative. They have genuinely been an amazing resource to refer to whenever I run into difficult design problems or if I have trouble articulating particular ideas in my head.

I see these books as great advice pieces from other designers, which should be used to enhance my design process but not taken fully verbatim. Everyone has their own experiences that influence their designing, so while I use literature as reinforcement for my decisions, I still want my designs to be unequivocally ‘me’.

Here I am enjoying some of the games that I like.
